Stairhaven Roussins Heading

About us

Stairhaven Roussins are the UK's longest established and Scotland’s largest Roussin flock.  Located near Luce Bay in the picturesque rolling hills of Wigtownshire in South West Scotland, farming 600 acres of grassland sweeping down to the coast.

We run a flock of 40 Pedigree Roussin Ewes with followers and a small flock of Beltex sheep all of which are M.V. Accredited and Scrapie Monitered.  In addition we also have approximately 200 commercial breeding sheep mainly consisting of Scotch Mules and Roussin crosses.

Stairhaven is also the Prefix for the pedigree herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle. With 40 breeding females the farm usually has a selection of quality young bulls for sale.  Our stock sires include Idvies El Cid.  With an additional 160 Commercial breeding females, we sell young stock both privately and at the local markets.

The Roussin

Roussins are rapidly becoming a popular choice for breeders looking for ease of lambing, with lambs that are up and suckling quickly. The ewes are milky with excellent mothering ability. Lambs kill out well with a high meat to bone ratio.  The farm mainly crosses the Roussin with Scotch Mule Hoggs and Gimmers. This produces a lamb that is extremely hardy, on its feet quickly with vigour and determination. They also cross well with the Blackface Ewe providing both a fat lamb and good females for breeding.

Stairhaven Roussins have a well proven record of success both in the sale and show ring.  Including Champion at Dumfries Show on several occasions and top price at Carlisle Roussin Sale held annually in September.  Tups are reared naturally and sold ready to work. The Fleming family take pride in the fact that customers, both beef and sheep, are pleased with the performance and longevity of their purchase.
